Custer State Park
Posted By: Bob Harris, 01-09-2014, 10:41 PM

Custer State Park is a state park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, USA. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. We visit the area every couple of years for the beauty of the landscapes and weather, but one of our favorite places is this drive through park. The last photo was from a previous visit during the spring after the snow melt, the initial photos were taken in the early fall SD GFP | State Parks | Directory | Custer State Park

Wow, that's a whole lot of wildlife! I can see why you like it there so much.

Interesting series, I would not want to mix it with that Bison
Bruce, here is a photo of the bison in the campground, this is one big bull. Their vision is poor and can spook very easily so it is best to give them some room.

Very nice series. I have been to multiple wildlife ranges with Bison but never with some of the other varieties of animals that they have there! Must have made for a really neat drive.
The drive is about 18 miles and there are many turnouts to stop and view the wildlife, we also spotted some elk but they were a bit far out for a decent photo.

Within the area there are several scenic roads to take including the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain road where you have several turnouts to view Mount Rushmore in the distance. There are lots of hiking trails so I think you would love the area.

thanks bud, sort of a repeat for you but it is always great to view this park and the area. We left Spearfish 3 days before the big storm in South Dakota this year, Deadwood had 4 foot of snow in the town, thousands of cattle were lost in the area due to snow and freezing.

thanks Norbert, I think a person could easily spend a full week exploring the area. Dave took some great shots of different locations last year, worth taking a look for sure.
