Custer State Park
Camera: K5 Photo Location: Custer, South Dakota
Posted By: Bob Harris, 01-09-2014, 10:41 PM

Custer State Park is a state park and wildlife reserve in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota, USA. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. We visit the area every couple of years for the beauty of the landscapes and weather, but one of our favorite places is this drive through park. The last photo was from a previous visit during the spring after the snow melt, the initial photos were taken in the early fall SD GFP | State Parks | Directory | Custer State Park

Some classic wildlife photos here, brother Bob. Is that a big horn sheep standing on the rock? Terrific image.

Bob, that is a very nice collection of wildlife images. It most be a rather large park to support that size of a Buffalo herd. Love the antelope picture and I have never seen a wild turkey. Thanks for posting them.

sure is buddy, and I pulled one of those tourist things, stopping almost in the middle of the road to take the photo.

Only made it there once, Bob, and your series brought back fond memories. Except when a tornado blew through, picking up power pylons like matchsticks, and we're hunkered down in the basement of an old school-house. I'd love to go back.

We have had several close calls with tornadoes over the years but have been fortunate that one has not touched right down on us. Even when one touched down about 3 miles from us the winds were in the 80mph area as the storm passed. This area is a great place to visit and so much to see and do, hope you get the chance to come back.

I think there are about 1,000 bison throughout the park CC, one even came into the campground and everyone stayed inside their RV's until he left.

Very nice series. I have been to multiple wildlife ranges with Bison but never with some of the other varieties of animals that they have there! Must have made for a really neat drive.
