Kombu seller
Lens: Tamron f2.8 17-50 Camera: K5iis Photo Location: Hokkaido, Japan

I asked this lady if I could take her photo because her face had so much character. She wanted to sell me kombu (kelp) of course, and I would have liked to buy some in return for the photo, but even if I could have got it home, I don't need that much dashi.

To me that is a wonderful shot Rob, that face has a lifetime of stories in it.

Nice candid shot.
Thanks! I'm usually too reticent to ask people for permission, so I don't take many.

Thanks Heinrich! That's exactly why I wanted the photo. The other reason was a photo I wish I'd taken years ago of someone with a similar face, so I didn't want to miss the chance this time.

Great shot.

I tend to do it the other way around and shoot first, because I've found if I ask first, the image then sometimes has a staged feel about it.

Thanks! I agree - the way you suggest is the only way to avoid the staged look. At least with a digital camera it's possible to delete the photo if they don't give permission. Fortunately this shot looks ok despite the fact that she knew I was taking it. There was a scene I saw years ago which I missed because I didn't know the language to ask permission, in that case it would have had to have been photo first ask later, because it wouldn't have worked staged. I was also using film at the time so deleting the photo wasn't possible.

Very nicely done, Rob. You're certainly adept at capturing a wide range of subjects beautifully.

Thanks Jer! That's one of the best compliments I've ever received about my photography.
