Duck on the run
Lens: Sun Opt Auto Zoom 85-210mm Camera: K-x ISO: 200 Aperture: F5.8
Posted By: Knock, 01-20-2014, 08:46 PM

I was concerned about catching the focus of the moving target with my manual zoom. I was lucky enough to hit the focus, but unfortunately my shutter speed wasn't quite fast enough to freeze the wings of the duck. I was hoping that 1/640 sec would get the job done. Next time I'll have to remember to bump the ISO and double the speed. Hopefully that'll be enough. With that said, I am still pleased with the image.

Nice attempt. 1/800 might do it for you. Most of my action is 1/125 to 1/250. I'm looking forward to being brave like you with manual focus action shots.

Unfortunately being brave has nothing to do with it. My K-x took a very hard fall several months ago, which damaged the auto focus motor. I was lucky the camera wasn't damaged worse. Needless to say, I've been shooting manual ever since. I do miss a lot of shots due from not hitting my focus, but to be honest I'm glad I was forced in the direction of going strictly manual. Getting a good shot is very gratifying. And there is a ton of fantastic old manual glass available that is cheap cheap cheap.

OK ... so you're learning the lessons we learned before AF. That's making progress!
