Boats and birds
Posted By: TomInJax, 04-11-2008, 04:58 PM

Here are a couple photos from my recent visit to Alameda, California. I was there on business and decided to take a few pictures while I had a chance. I love California!!

Comments appreciated (positive criticism please).

Hi Tom. I find the dock in the foreground distracting/breaks the mast reflections - I would look for a different angle/dock/lines that would draw me into photo. I quite like the panning/bird in motion shot. Ken.

I quite like the shot of the duck, what a wonderful sense of motion!

Hmmm... Ok, you are right. I cropped the photo a bit for composition. What do you think now?

On the other hand, here is one that the distraction is the subject:

Thanks Tim. I think that the full resolution image is even better. The duck's eye is so sharp!

I think that image of the duck is a fun one. It looks, with the combination of the motion on the wings but the focus on the body and the lack of a clear background, that he is flapping away but not going anywheres. Actually a very good picture capturing the motion and all.

I think boatyards are hard to capture nicely and need that something extra as a fog or morning light or an interesting subject. Technically a good shot.

Funny thing about the shot is that it didn't look good in the preview. Only when I opened it on the computer did I actually see it! I was very happy with it.

Thanks for the comments. I seldom get many - if any comments and I wonder if my skills suck. I know that I must be able to get off something now and then that is ok. It is nice to hear some critique.

I would have submitted to the Photographic Critique area, but I don't want to get flamed. Or worse, people giving advice or critique that don't know what they are talking about.

Again, thanks for all the comments. I promise I will try harder! I used to do portrait photography professionally and did well at the time, but scenics and art are new to me.

I like the Mallard as well. I also really like the first boat shot. I would suggest straighten a bit. Seems to lean toward the right a smidge. Nice work

Howdy Tom

You were in Alameda? How long did you get to stay?

I love the mallard shot, the color, the motion and the little trail of water is very cool.

I like the shot out of the window of the jet too. Golden gate park looks huge from the air...

Wish I would have known you were here, I probably drove right past you. Would have stopped in for a beer and chat...

Thanks for the invite! I may be back again in the next few months. I did have pizza and beer one evening for dinner.

Yes, I was at our Alameda office for three days. The office is in the Marina Village area. I stayed a few blocks away from the office at a hotel next to the Oakland Yacht club. The weather was perfect. I didn't get out early enough to take advantage of the morning fog. It was clearing as I got out in the morning.
