Pacific Black Duck
Lens: DA 55-300 Camera: K5iis Photo Location: Audley, NSW
Posted By: RobG, 01-26-2014, 04:47 AM

I photographed this duck at Audley in the Royal National Park, the world's second National Park after Yellowstone. When the "Royal National Park" was first declared, their idea of what it was for was very different to what we think of today. Happily, most of the habitat has survived, but they wanted to cut everything down to make playing fields and arboretums. At Audley, they put a weir across the river so people could use rowboats. An attempt was made to introduce swans to the pond, but the eels ate them!

Beautiful image, Rob! But... eels ate swans? I don't think I'd want to meet those eels!

Thanks - I'm curious now how much more detail the DA*300 would have shown, but it demonstrates that the 55-300 is still pretty good!

It's tiny compared to Yellowstone, but does preserve some important habitats and green space on the southern side of Sydney. I visited Yellowstone briefly many years ago, and I'll always remember the Bison, Elk, waterfalls, geysers and hot springs.

They ate cygnets, which is a lot easier. There's plenty of waterbirds on the pond today, but no swans!
