Good question! There was a statue of Buddha in Nara where if you rubbed the statue and then rubbed a part of your body that was injured, it was said to bring healing. This could be similar but if so, I didn't see a sign to explain it (not even in Japanese). Maybe rubbing Buddha's knee brings good luck?
