Shrewsbury River, Shrewsbury NJ Circa 1890

This is a shot from my great great grandfathers farm around 1890. I think the photographer was John Heckle, a relative who operated a portrait studio in NYC at the time. Just for something different. I have no idea what was used to make the photograph. But I do love the composition.

Great photo. Odd how much impact it has, even though it is so old, and so "imperfect" by modern standards. No wonder so many filters and apps try to imitate this.

I could look at this for hours. The pose makes you wonder what the woman is thinking and I would love to ask her but i would hate to interrupt her mood. Thanks for sharing this one. It is lovely.

I have a series of photos taken at the same time as this. The ladies are all in black so the family may have gathered for a funeral. Which could account for the somber reflective mood of the photo. And there is no filter than can reproduce the aging of a century in the attic.

This has the kind of mood and mystery so many strive for in vain with modern equipment.
