Half Way House
Camera: K-7
Posted By: Bruce Clark, 02-08-2014, 04:30 PM

This roadhouse at Kimba SA, is claimed to be the half way point across Australia. From where to where I am not too sure. (Sydney - Perth probably). Any way we arrived, hot and bothered on New Years Day, it was shut. Just lucky I guess.

Fortunately the resident big Galah stuck around. It was sheer coincidence that the good lady was dressed in the same colours as the bird. I am on very dangerous territory here as all Australians would know. The Galah is synonymous for a foolish person. I could not resist and no doubt will repent at leisure

This so reminds me of the buildings that we have across the deserts back in the day that had signs miles before arriving that said, see "The Thing". You could buy everything from rattlesnakes encased in plastic to Indian arrowheads. I would love to visit this place Bruce and it's half way.

That's one tremendous bird! A touristy place for sure.

Is that an Australian thing, saying "shut," meaning "not open for business?" I notice there's a big sign in the first picture that says "SHUT" too. I've never seen that here; we always say "closed" instead. The door is shut, but the store is closed.

I am not sure if we observe any distinction between the terms here, they are pretty much interchangeable. The place was closed for business which we thought was unusual given it was a Public Holiday.

Well it's certainly enterprising individual trying to make a living, out of being a long way in either direction.

When you said halfway house this wasn't quite what came to mind. Sorry you found it closed but that enormous bird surely made up for it.
