Resting high on a tall tree until I decided to get out of the car .... walked slowly ... and of course it took off !
I even managed to cut some of the upper wing end off !
Enjoy!

Wow, what a beautiful bird. I was just watching a documentary on these the other day. Looks like a young male you have there.

JP - most of us would be thrilled with a shot like this - cropping and all. Look forward to seeing more - just find yourself some quieter snow shoes

Thanks for the kind comment!

As for the snow shoes, I did get myself in a little trouble just before taking that shot, at another trail. The snow was so deep and fluffy that I ended up thigh-deep in snow and trying to trek between small twigs and trees!
Gosh, I'm out of shape!
The Snow Owls are somewhat easier to get at, in a way: no need for snow shoes where they are.

Great shot - the missing wing tip hardly detracts at all.

Excellent shot of a very handsome creature, small pity about the wingtip but good work none the less. I am sure the next one will be even better.

It flew off - but you captured it really well. I don't have a telephoto lens - but whenever I get ANYWHERE near a bird it flies off

You really nailed those white feathers. I think it is a great shot and I would be proud of it were it mine.

Thanks !
Glad to see that it does not bother that much ... that missing wing tip!
Cheers!

Yes, I know ... that's what happens when you're not paying attention at where you look in that viewfinder.
I got a couple more later, but it wasn't flying that time around.

Thanks for the comment!

They usually are quite nervous, no matter what the size.
However, when the Snowies are on the hunt, or near going to hunt, they fly off rapidly.
When they're well stuffed up ... they'll sit there even if you get closer ... well, that's my experience around here.

Thanks for the comment too!

How come all of the latest posts I have done are in one single "multiple quote" ??
I didn't click on the "Multi-quote this message" icon at all !?

That's because of this .......contest going on which has become nothing more than a post count race. Adam initiated what you are seeing to avert some of it......

I thought it predated the contest and was used to help merge consecutive posts in the Marketplace, and was then expanded to more of the forums. Contest or not, I think it is a great way to keep things tidy, especially for thread starters who are good about thanking everyone who comments on a thread because it ties up all the replies into on neat package.

I simply can't pull this sort of shot off. My hat, however, is off . . . . . . . to your great pic.
