Moon and aurora
Posted By: jac, 02-10-2014, 05:57 PM

Taken out on the ice of Hudson's Bay with one view looking back at the Cape Dorset itself. The moon was waxing at around 68% so lots of light from it; it also moved a bit during the 11 seconds of exposure but I sort of liked the effect. And darned cold. I don't worry too much in the daytime but at night, I always wonder where the nearest polar bear is. But I guess if he sneaks up, it's too late to worry anyway. The other thing that's a bit nerve-raking is the noise the ice makes against the shore-line. In the last photo you can see the height of the ice plate; it's almost low-tide and as the pan sinks it makes these dreadful grinding noises that, if you are close enough, make you feel a little small. Like a close-up bear can make you feel Or a passenger on the Titanic, I suppose.

Gotta apologise for throwing a curve to the "Why i won't buy …" thread but you know how it is. the camera is actually a great piece of equipment that makes me look good sometimes

such beautiful captures, too bad we don't have them in the deserts where it is warmer. Thanks for sharing, I'm so jealous.

Great pictures and the sort of thing I'd love to try ... once.
The last two would make great book covers for science fiction novels, particularly the last one because of the smeared out moon.
Kind of eerie isn't it? Thanks

You have to do something with the long nights up here

Those first two are really awesome. The last two are other worldly. TFS these. We see them in photographs sometimes but none as nice as these.
Yup. It's funny that we often take them for granted since they are visible so often. Thanks for the kind words.

Yup. It's pretty amazing in real time. Thanks

The first couple of images are just breath taking, you have even captured the reflections of the sky too.
Unintentional but it worked. Didn't I once tell you to head up the Orkneys and try it yourself, Kerrowdown? Too many pretty sights on the streets, I guess Thanks for commenting. John

I like it for what I do but I keep hearing that people who use auto-focus for wildlife and sports are a bit stressed by erratic selection of a focal point. Moosonee is nice; it has trees; I miss trees. Thanks for the kind words.

Well, about this AF thing with the K3 ... I am ready to start a thread on that.
It will be more or less titled as "K3 Definite guide to AF settings".

Yes, a few more trees there vs. your current location I bet. Mind you, I lived in Hearst for a while ... lots of trees and all of the same type/size! Black spruce! (goes with the nasty bugs).

Aye you did, Orkneys are grand for many things, but never the lights for me, Mrs Kerrowdown rather likes Sheila Fleet jewellery, so it can be a very expensive trip.

Took a look at Ms. Fleet's site. For a mere £5,825, you can pick her up a lovely little necklet that will keep her happy while you shoot. Think of the joy it will bring you both. Everyone wins.

Thats another D4 or D4s oops wrong forum, or Pentax FF for about that, allowing a few more years inflation before its launch.

Excellent series.

Forgive my ignorance as my part of the world is bear-free, but would the p-bears still be hibernating this time of year?

The mothers den in the winter to give birth. Basically a snow-cave which they dig out of in the spring. Their metabolism slows but it is not hibernating as such. The males continue to hunt throughout the year, day and long nights. Thanks.
