The Planes of Fame museum in Chino has a monthly talk about "something", and this month was the Reno air races. Present in the panel are all the living winners of the race (except the first winner who was out of state). There have only been 19 different winners over the years.
Left to right...
Bruce Lockwood (1999), Engineer "Secret Pete", Steve Hinton Sr (1978, 85), the producer (Mark?) of the "Chasing Reno Gold DVD", hidden by the podium is Darryl Greenamyer (1966, 67, 68, 69, 71, 77), Clay Lacy (1970), and Steve Hinton Jr (2009).
Here's Darryl Greenamyer. He says he won the first race but was disqualified for landing at a different airport. The designated runway had people and planes around it and Darryl was not comfortable landing there. So, Mira Slovak was declared the winner.
The "after" people. Pete, wearing the Conquest 1 shirt, helped develop the water-boiling/oil-cooling process used in race planes.
Clay Lacy, right, was an airline pilot, aerial cinematographer, air racer, and still performs at airshows. He's 82.
Steve-O Hinton Jr, won the race at age 22. He grew up at the Planes of Fame, where Steve Sr is the president.
Autographing.
