Lens: Helios 44M-3 Camera: K200D Photo Location: Brighton, Victoria, Australia ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F3.5

I have several lenses which are around 50mm, including a SMC A 50/1.4, but I keep coming back to this old Russian classic, the Helios 44M-3. It is a very affordable cone of the Zeiss Biotar 58mm. Earler versions have 13 aperture blades, making for nice bokeh, but no multicoating. Later versions have multicoating but only 6 aperture blades. I think the 44M-3 is a nice compromise, it has multicoating and 8 aperture blades.

There is something about the way this lens renders which I find really pleasing. There is a subtlety to its tonal rendering which goes really well with the film-like output of the K200D's CCD sensor.

What are your favourite fast 50 lenses?

The early Helios are well known for their rendering of the out of focus areas and this sort of image is where they excel. The colors seem a bit muted or dark, which gives a subtle feel to the image.

Aye, it's given a beautiful delicate feel to the image somehow, but without softening it.

A real keeper in my book, well worthy of my "print it large and get it on the wall" award, well done.

That background is wonderful in its framing of the delicate rose. I think the photographer here has something to do with how the lens behaves.
