Helios action
Lens: Helios 40 (85mm f/1.5) Camera: K-5 IIs Aperture: F1.8
Posted By: scratchpaddy, 02-13-2014, 09:29 PM

I've been getting lots of pictures at the dog park lately. A whole lot. In an effort to slow myself down, I've taken the Helios 40 for the past few days. It's far and away my most difficult lens to use. The minuscule DOF makes it frustratingly inconsistent. The stiff focus ring doesn't help. It does amazing things with backlit subject, but its nonexistent flare resistance makes things dodgy. Anything outside the center is crap.

It hasn't worked! I wound up with just as many pictures as ever. Now I have to share them with you. I hope you're not sick of them yet.

Rosie the Doberman. Skippy's terrified of her.

Tara the crazy Vizsla. I've posted pictures of her before, but this angle gave me a good excuse to catch her owner, too. Lovely lady.

I don't know this one's name, though I should. I see her all the time.

Jake, who's found some mud to cool his butt with.

This is Max (on the right), who I saw for the first time yesterday. He's some kind of Golden mix. Beautiful dog.

His owner had a water bowl with her. Every time he wanted a drink, he'd lay down next to the bowl. She said he never eats or drinks standing up.

#3 is pretty much the essence of a happy dog. I would look forward to seeing a some corgi running. They are incredibly happy dogs.

Wow, love the depth of field and bokeh here. Sounds like a hard lens to use - but you've got some real great results.

Really like Jake - the DOF here is awesome and he is really sharp and really cute.

Great job throughout

That's my favorite of the bunch, too. I hardly ever see any corgis, though. I'll make sure to try and get a picture next time I see one.

Cool photos, very artistic-looking. Good job nailing the exposure and focus on such difficult subjects

Yes, he wanted a model release first.

Hey, you just need to find a better landlord. Apartment life works for me and Skippy.

Me too, but why do you keep calling me Ivan?

Thanks! It took me a while to get used to this lens's quirks, but it was worth it.

You're welcome! I enjoy watching them every chance I get.

Or perhaps Helioi? You got me wondering. Apparently, the plural of Helios is just Helios, according to Dictionary.com.

I'm a big fan of what it does with late-afternoon light. It kinda falls flat at other times.

That's the only reason I put up with this darn lens.
