Cardinal Courtship

Northern Cardinal courtships are interesting...
First... they're monogamous... fairly unique among any species these days ;-) The males will aggressively defend their mates. You can see some of the battle wounds on this brightly-colored gentleman.

All shots with K20D and Pentax F*300/4.5


The apple of his eye...


And my favorite Cardinal Courtship Ritual... when the male feeds the
female..."beak to beak".

Would you go this far for your mate?

Romanticism chivalry might be dead in humans but these shots prove otherwise in the animal kingdom.
