I took the photo as the sun was starting to set and the rays were striking the upper portion of the Palo Verde tree.

Bob is there anything you don't photograph well? It isn't just the technical aspects but you really do have an interesting take on many different styles of photography. No exception here.

thanks so much Marc, this was an old tree in one of our campgrounds we stayed in. I went and took some photos earlier of the tree and they weren't very special. As the sun was setting I noticed how it was hitting the tree top and my timing was almost perfect. I snapped a series of photos and in about 2 minutes the effect was gone. I got back to the motorhome and Terri asked where I had been, my dinner was ready a half hour ago.

Nice to hear the true story. Hopefully later today I'll post some images of a couple of trees near me that I've been trying to capture but can't quite get the right effect. They were damaged in the ice storm we had such that they lost almost all of the fine branches near the top, which landed on the ground in a circle around the trees. I just can't get the mood that I think should be conveyed. Tried shooting at sunset the other day, and don't think I really go it.

Can you tell me more about this shot - what lens or focal length were you using, and were you basically looking up the tree from underneath?

you nailed it, doesn't look like it but I took the photo from beneath, but It seemed like it was almost on its side. I used the 43mm ltd on this shot. Honestly Marc, I think it was all about the lighting, not so much my skills.

Is is pretty dark and sinister. I think she is right, the drastic contrast helps

Winter tree, ha! You haven't seen winter in years Bob. Lounging around in all that 90 degree sunshine. This is a lovely shot and the B&W is so nice. The lighting was spot on.
