Abstract ice
Posted By: MSL, 02-16-2014, 11:23 PM

With all the "Southerners" posting their winter snow shots, I felt I ought to go back and see what I managed to capture from the December ice storm. Mostly a lot of not very good images - primarily the photographer's fault, but also due to a lot of subsequent overcast days with uniformly white/grey skies that didn't help the lighting at all. One solution was to take a few photos with flash pre-sunrise - but only before my hands and feet went numb. Some photos show the added pleasure of the snow that followed the ice - definitely added insult to injury for many of the trees across the city. Final excuse for the image flaws is that I processed these quickly so I'm sure more talented hands could make them a little (a lot) better.

They are now. Didn't realize when I cut and pasted the links to each image it was adding extra [URL] tags. You don't see them in the HTML version of the editor, only when you switch to text.

I like these images Marc, appreciate you fighting the elements to share with us. I hope to never be able to photograph these, so they are special to view for me.

I like them! Snow & ice sure is pretty in pictures, but in reality, it sucks.

There are some good one there Marc especially the last few. That was a major storm for sure , I remember a few of those storms as a kid when I lived in Montreal. Lots of permanent damage to the trees if I remember correctly. Don't get many out here ,not warm enough usually.

OMG, that's a lot of ice! I remember a few ice storms from the time I lived in Michigan, but never like that! Great captures!

That is a lot of ice. So much more dangerous than snow. I love the last three.

Ice is pretty good in a cold drink or ice rink

Yes - a lot of tree damage. Initially the problem was more from tree limbs hanging really low to the ground because of the weight of the ice, even if they didn't break. But there was also a lot of breakage and subsequent damage when the temperatures dropped in the days that followed. Our area already had a lot of diseased trees waiting to be replace and this just exacerbated the problem.

Agreed. It is one thing to know about an impending snow storm - you stay off the roads and wait for the plows and salt trucks to do their job. Here, everyone knew the ice was coming and it was just a slow build up over 24 - 48 hours. Not much you can do to prevent it from happening, and particularly damaging to electricity equipment.

Thanks all for the comments. I have a few other storm related shots to process, but the white, uniform skies made for very flat lighting and uninspired shots.

I've run into that a lot lately. You still got some good photos.

Thank you. But this is a pretty selective edit that avoided anything taken under the tough conditions, and there is one shot from those that I really wanted to make work (and maybe with some PP it might)...
