I bought my Vivitar Series 1 105 f/2.5 this winter. In Minnesota, the macro possibilities in winter
amount to shots of coins, marbles on the counter, random stuff pulled out of the junk
drawer, birdseed. Not what you'd call... inspirational.
Today, I got home from work, and it was 55 degrees and sunny - but incredibly windy -
our April equivalent of balmy & beautiful. Wife was out back with the little guy, and she
pointed out a small patch of purple flowers poking up through last fall's dead stuff. Literally,
the only living, colorful thing in the back yard. I went and got the Viv, not expecting much -
never shot any serious macro before, it was super windy, and I didn't have a tripod. Figured
I'd just take look at 1-2 and 1-1 magnification, colors, DOF, basically just get a feel for the Viv.
To my surprise I was able to get off shot after shot of more than acceptable 1-2 shots, and
even a few 1-1 shots - on a windy day, handheld, sitting in the grass.
I'm amazed at this lens right now - and it's moved into a temporary lead for my favorite.
Here's a 1-2 (or 3?) snapshot, handheld, jpeg:
