Whale Sharks
Camera: Olympus TG-1 Photo Location: Bahia de La Paz
Posted By: monoloco, 02-18-2014, 07:46 AM

We took advantage of some unseasonably warm weather to go swim with the whale sharks in the bay of La Paz. The visibility wasn't great but I managed a few shots with the point and shoot. They really are impressive creatures.

I just wish that my point and shoot had a wider lens so I could have got the whole shark in the frame. La Paz is a good place to see them, they hang out close to the city for months at a time.

It is quite an experience, this one was a juvenile, they can get to 60 feet long.

It sounds like you need to book a trip to Baja.

You may well be right.

I have tried to do it in several different locations around the world (swim with wild dolphins in the wild), but on my days, the dolphins didn't want to cooperate.

And you keep can keep that swimming with sharks nonsense.

Actually, the whale sharks are gentle plankton feeders and quite harmless.

Wildbook for Whale Sharks Photo-identification Library keeps a database of whale sharks sighted around the world for research and conservation purposes. They use the unique pattern behind the gills for identification of different individuals, if you submit photos of a shark already in the database you get history of where and when it was sighted, if it's a new entry you have the opportunity to name the shark - they will also email you updates anytime your shark is spotted.

These are the sort of shots where you definitely can't capture what it was like unless you were there. Or unless you had REALLY expensive equipment. Sounds like great fun though, and a great opportunity.
