Shattered hopes
Crushed memories
Lost lives
you've captured many sentiments in one well composed image.

Really like this one. Share the PP on it? It tells many stories. Very good job.

I use GIMP, in Linux.
Raw process was just a bit of increased exposure in UFraw, then import to GIMP.
Gimp was a slight crop to get rid of some fenceposts and then used Filters > Artistic > Cartoon.

I don't know off hand what the cartoon settings are, but they are set way low, just enough to pop the edges and add some grain.
I don't know if such an effect is available in any other program.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it and love learning how other people get such wonderful effects.

I always wonder what events lead to why the houses get abandoned. I always want to photograph them.

In this area, settlers showed up from the East during a wet snap, and the crops were good and easy. However in a few years, the normal climate returned, dry high plains scrub desert. Without irrigation even livestock, horses, cattle, etc cannot be ranched. Sheep can be raised, but only by continuous wandering.
This is harsh country here, blazing hot with almost no moisture in summer, extreme cold with dry drifting snow in winter.
The snow does not melt much here, it evaporates.

Great composition in this shot. A good tutorial for GIMP's Cartoon effect is here:

Wow, that was really involved, much more than I ever do.
I just choose Filters>artistic>Cartoon
and I have settings 2.00 mask and 0.200 percent black

I use it on portraits and landscapes, adds a nice edge with slight grain, looks cool on faces in B/W conversions!
