Flying Squirrel on a Snowy Night
Lens: K-5 Camera: Tamron 90 macro Photo Location: Whitney, Ontario, Canada ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/150s Aperture: F11

I usually don't use flash, but Tripper pointed out a flying squirrel at the start of our evening dog walk. He seemed quite agreeable to hanging around and didn't fly off until I put a peanut up in his tree for him, as soon as he got the peanut he sailed off into the night.

We know these guys live around here, but we've seen them twice in 5 years..... so rarely captured for sure.

I have never seen one of these guys. Thanks so much for sharing these. It has the most gorgeous eyes of any squirrel. Beautiful sharp photos. The snow is a nice bonus too.

Amazing capture. I've never seen one in real life despite living in their range for most of my life.

You definitely have to be lucky.... but once I found him, he seemed remarkably tame... didn't seem at all bothered by my presence. They come to our porch, to eat what's left of the seed from the bird feeders, but usually so late at night we are sleeping we suspect. We wouldn't have noticed this guy if Tripper hadn't pointed.

Are these critters true cousins of Otis, or is it just a naming convention.

Great shot of something I've not seen before.

From wikipedia...

These studies found support that flying squirrels originated 18–20 million years ago, are monophyletic, and have a sister relationship with tree squirrels.

No, they fly off the porch, not onto it as far as I know. There are lots of images of them on line flying, I'll just have to work out a strategy.

Apparently they are major sources of food for owls around here, both owls and flying squirrels being nocturnal.

Incredible, Norm. I've never seen one, either (and not likely to hereabouts). TFS!
