You needed that fast shutter speed for these fliers. These guys are so darn quick in the air except for when they hover. Great shots and the last one is just absolutely perfect.

Forster's Tern moulting from non-breeding to breeding plumage. (Least Tern has yellow legs and dark outer primary flight feathers)

Wow! I love that last shot in particular - you REALLY caught some action there! The splash is beautiful! And the bird even more! I never got anything remotely similar out of my Sigma 150-500mm, and now I sold it.

What did you shoot with before the K-3, snooked? I am hoping my BIF-results will improve significantly, when I can afford to upgrade my K5. I look forward to that. Oh, and I look forward to the terns returning too - this winter has lasted too long already.

I shot with K-5 also. It worked well with the sigma also.

Hmm, well, I got a lot of nearly-in-focus shots with that combo, and AF-S was the only setting that left me with any keepers (constantly half-pressing and releasing the shutter while I panned).

Of course explanations might include, not mutually exclusive
1) Your superior skill
2) Your superior Florida light conditions
3)Your more audience-friendly birds

Anyway, you nailed it.

With the K-5 and K-3 I use AF-C but disabled the shutter half pressed from focusing. I went in the menu and set focus to operate only with the AF button pressed. Works great with AF-S when you use spot focus on a certain area and re-frame before pressing the shutter. I use F8 to F11 for better depth of field and a high enough ISO to achieve at least 1/1000 sec.

Impressive, and I think now i should take this advice. When i got my K-30 last week, i did set mine up with the AF button, but missed a couple shots because it does not feel natural to me. I then set it back to half shutter press, I see the BIF shots that others are getting with that setup, and I am thinking I should darn well GET used to it!

Great shots!!
