Red-tailed Hawk
Posted By: Kameko, 02-23-2014, 10:16 AM

My first encounter with a red-tailed hawk. I see them once in a blue moon so far off in the distance that even at 250mm, they look like a speck of dirt. Not this time

Wonderfully detailed photos - and the thin snow adds another layer of interest...

By the way, you can tell this is a young individual - the irises turn brown as they mature.

Thanks for the complements everyone I'm very happy with how these photos turned out.

I did not use a tripod. That's why my shutter speed is always a 'little' on the faster side. No tripod, manual focus. Invest in the 60 - 250, you won't regret it!

We have the red tail in the desert but never have I gotten close enough for a shot like this. Beautiful capture.

Seriously, Pentax does make great lenses. That 60-250 is absolutely top notch considering everything I've seen from it...
But of course your eye is what made the picture, not the hardware. I'm just glad the hardware made justice to what your eye was seeing!

Stunning capture, well done. I miss red tails. Here in Europe we have closely related buzzards, but they just don't look half as cool for some reason. Possibly because they are mostly scavengers, but your red tails are real hunters.
