Cool, Rob - I find the "regimented" look of these things interesting.

Beautiful shot, you really get a good feeling of the height.

Tough shot from a lighting perspective and it looks like you got it right. Also nice visual perspective - I've seen isolated bamboo growing before but never as a forest.

Great shot, I too did not think the stalks would get that thick.

Thanks! Me too; they look like cones of each other. I've seen clumps of bamboo in Australia but nothing like this.

Thanks Paul! Normally I try to get photos without people, but in this case they're important for scale.

Bamboo is everywhere in Japan, but there's not many forests like this from what I've seen. Maybe I should call it a lawn, since bamboo is a grass?

The highlights are a little blown out in a couple of places, but the contrast was pretty high.

Thanks! I'm so glad I went to Tenryu-ji; the gardens were beautiful, and the walk back through the bamboo was special.

Welcome! Me and thousands of Japanese people.

I have seen similar forest around Mount Ranier. Normally we only see baby stalks of bamboo - not fully grown ones like this, although there's lots of species and some grow bigger than others. I've seen a species of black bamboo that was still the thickness of your thumb after decades.

Yep, the only grass I know that grows like a tree! Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Ha! Some species of bamboo grow more than a foot per day! Can't say what the sound effects were for Rob, but my boss has a big bamboo planting and when the wind blows, the plants sway in the breeze and make the strangest creaks, cracks and other noises. Grass on steroids, indeed!

A literal forest of Bamboo, there's a few floors in that lot.

It wasn't a windy day, so it was actually very quiet. The mass of round stems absorbs all the sound from outside.

True - except it belongs to a shrine, so I suspect the only thing it might end up as would be festival decorations. Of course, this particular forest is a tourist attraction, so I doubt that they'll touch it! At New Year, the shrines and temples sell decorative arrangements which often feature bamboo - they go on either side of your front door to ward off evil spirits and invite good spirits into your home or business.
