My first upload to the Forum. My first afternoon with the new 50mm (my first lens since the kit). The first crocus to bloom in the yard so far. Shot in RAW with tiny tweaks from iPhoto only.

Beautiful, I can't wait for the Crocus to signal spring is here. It's so cold. Is it pentax-DA 1.8/50mm?

Lots of firsts here. Beautiful crocus. Can I ask why you used such a fast shutter speed and high iso on this image?

thanks. It was very windy, so I needed the high shutter speed. Given the aperture, high ISO was the only way to balance (as a newbie that works for me!).

Beautiful! Here's one I took last year in our front yard. Keep getting great shots!

ISO 800 isn't so high so no need to apologize for that. Was the selection of f1.8 intentional or in order to keep the shutter speed as high as possible? While a wide open aperture can isolate the foreground from a smeared out background, in this case you've ended up with a half and half effect as the grass is still pretty identifiable. In high wind, you sometimes just need to patient for the pauses between gusts, or sometimes shoot using burst mode to catch the one image where the wind was minimal. Looking forward to more shots.

The f1.8 was intended, as I was after an element of bokeh behind. It was the iPhoto contrast that brought some of the grass back into recognisable form. If I was taking this again, I might increase (or is it decrease) the aperture to, say, 5.0 or 7.1 to bring the front petal into focus. That said, I quite like the way the blurred stem takes your eye from the ground to the blurred petals and then back to the sharper elements. It's all in the learning curve!

It would be interesting to see the photo without this treatment.

Gracias, thank you, merci etc.
I much prefer the second version. I'd crop it, probably to put the crocus on the right third, but I like the colors so much better and the background has better blurring.
