Whenever I visit Ely I am always drawn to the cathedral one of the most beautiful in Great Britain and unique for its Octagonal tower (to the right of this photograph)

That takes me back. Truly a beautiful cathedral. Did you get any shots inside? This outside image is beautiful.

That looks awesome, but the cost of maintenance alone makes me shudder. Are all the religious people in England rich?

Hi Slowpez

No I didn't go inside.
1. I've been inside several times before and prefer to photograph the outside of churches & cathedrals in this country and 2. Ely Cathedral now charges visitors to go inside - to which I object!

Hi Normhead

No they're not. We have many ways of paying for the upkeep of all our historic building thorugh taxes, admission charges, grant schemes, appeal funds, donations, a national lottery etc;

England is "littered" with old building like this. My summary of the architecture in Cambridge, which isn't far from Ely, is that there are two types of buildings. That which is very old, and that which should be torn down (as most of the recent stuff that was put up had no aesthetic appeal to it, whereas you could tell the very old buildings from the retrofitted plumbing )
