Drama in the desert. (Warning: Lots of pictures!)
Posted By: savoche, 03-03-2014, 02:07 PM

I thought this rather long winded photo story illustrates the hardships of nature quite well.

One early morning in Etosha we encountered some hyenas that had killed a springbok. The following hour was quite eventful. (Also notice the curious onlooker in the background of the first four pictures )

The hyenas with their kill.

Chasing away some jackals...

...to no avail.

Deciding to move the food...

...but the jackals tag along.

Some of them enjoy the spoils...

...while others still aim for the main course.

Annoying critters, they are!

One of the hyenas discovers an intruder.

The other decide to grab the food and run.

Too late!

...but the jackals won't give up!

Never give up.

Annoying critters, they are!

MY food!

Impatiently waiting.

Tucking in.

Finished half an hour later.

...leaving the scraps for the jackals, now bothered by the pied crows

We were the first to get to this spot. The people arraving half an hour later never saw the hyenas and most probably thought that the lion was the killer in this drama.
It pays to get up early!

Thanks for looking!

Just when you thought of settling down to dinner, the big boys come in and take it away, that's true real laws of the jungle.

I think this, technically speaking, is savanna, even if it's rather dry. But yeah, the rules are the same.

Wonderful series. Worthy of Oasis HD. The giraffe sunset is captivating. Animals enjoy a good sunset as well.

Yes, I find that the Silver Efex presets do a really nice job with most pictures with minor adjustments (as long as there is sufficient contrast to begin with, of course).

Wow, thanks for the kind words! I would never have had the patience to make a film, though! Stills are plenty challenging for me

Fantastic, and a mini-documentary sure to cause extreme envy in the halls of National Geographic ;>)

WHAT LENS?

Wow! Fantastic photo essay. It illustrates the eternal feud between Lion and Hyena, while it shows typical Jackal behaviour - arguably the most persistent and fearless scavengers in the African wild.

Thanks, but I don't expect NatGeo to call anytime soon

All pictures were taken with the humble SMC DA 55-300. I sometimes think about a DA*300, or something longer, but my trusty 55-300 keeps giving results I'm happy with.

Baie dankie! Yes, those jackals never stop till they get what they're after.

I'll dust off my copy of the same lens this week. As we all know, its not the quality of the camera or the lens, but the depth of the eye looking through them

Thanks again!
