Cropping Experiment - Zeroing in on an Egret
Lens: FA 77/1.8 Camera: K-3 Photo Location: Lake Jackson, TX ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/350s Aperture: F8
Posted By: Sailor, 03-15-2014, 09:58 AM

The other day, I was out exploring a new FA 77 at a local park near the Brazos River. In order to get a "feel" for the lens, I was photographing everything from power poles to tree leaves, and I stopped to shoot a couple of pics of an egret doing a bit of fishing; I posted a heavily-cropped version earlier. With this second shot, I got a bit more aggressive with cropping, and below I've attached both the cropped and un-cropped original for comparison.

You got some major sharpness going on there Jer. Good job for the photographer, the lens, and of course, the K-3.

Like Susan said great combination there buddy, I'm surprised you still have such sharpness with that large of a crop.

Thanks, Capn. I was pleased and, frankly, a bit surprised at the results.

Thanks, Susan - I think it demonstrates the resolution of the K-3; the only reason I "upgraded" to a K-3 was to be able to crop more aggressively and thus give some "virtual reach" to the small, light lenses I prefer to carry.

I was surprised too, brother Bob . . . . . and pleased.

That's why I bought my K-3, being able to crop can be just as good as having a longer lens.

Thus far, I'm getting more than my money's worth in this regard. Also, there's the "side" benefit of some operational improvements like the faster processor.

Thanks, Tony. If I can get this kind of detail with an aggressive crop, the K-3 will more than earn its keep.
