Night Shooting With The M85mm
Lens: smc M 85mm f/2.0 Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Downtown Denver ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1/150s Aperture: F2
Posted By: rbefly, 03-16-2014, 10:20 PM

Here's my second edition of the M85 appreciation saga, all ISO 3200, wide-open-to-f/2.8 night photos.
1) The Nebraska Girls Volleyball team, and they can sing, too! With a helpful street musician for accompaniment. 1/160s, f/2.8.
2) B + W street scene. This one is a bit muddy, the shot was underexposed initially. But check the Bokeh and highlights! Sort of a film noir look. F/2.0, 1/160s.
3) Look out! Here the slowish shutter speed blurred the horse slightly, but the couple are sharp.
4) Same scene, 1 second earlier. Different crop and PP' ed in color.
5) Last, the 85 at full rack (reach), peeking into the Paramount Grill, those colors are pretty realistic, too. Foreground blur (OOF) has a different effect from background blur, it's supposed to 'lead' the eye to the in-focus areas. I'm not sure it works here, though.
All shots used the K-5, M mode and a lot of squinting.
Ron

Thanks for posting these. The 3rd is my favourite. The M85 is a great lens!

I really dig the third one, Ron. I've never seen an M 85/2.0. I have an A* 85/1.4; I wonder if their designs are closely related.

85's Rule!

Thanks to volley and Jer, I appreciate it!
Jer, I don't think the M and A series of 85's are related, the M is tiny, barely bigger than the M 50 f/1.4, or the M 28 f/2.0. It's shorter than the M 100 2.8, also.
And it has that great M/F feel, the metal build, the roll of the focusing action, and is discreet enough to pass for a normal prime, even with a hood. Nice and bright in the V/F, too.
I understand the A* 85 f/1.4 is a prized Legacy lens, I've never had one but have seen a few, mostly in glass cases! It's a 10 on the reviews! I'd enjoy seeing some of your work with it.
The M85's go for $200-$300 nowadays and I could understand why someone would prefer the Samyang (and the gang) or Sigma version, brand-new, M/F, a full stop faster, etc. No problem.
It's that Legacy thing. You understand.
Ron
