Unmarked police car caught this guy crossing the middle of the street. $ 50 fine. Poor guy, not his day.

Unmarked police car...but if one knows what to look for....you can see it's a police package Chevy Impala. Check out the police wheels...car stance...radio bubbles on the hood...also not sure it was unmarked...I can see faint police markings on the side.

Better he get a $ 50 ticket than be hit by a vehicle.

Yes you can see the faint markings, this is how they do it here cause some years ago the unmarked traffic cruisers caused a few accidents and deaths I believe.
So the City puts faint markings on them.
I can spot them easily and so can most folks but it`s funny how some people are simply not aware of their surroundings.
Stay alert and aware.

"Jaywalking" is not automatically more dangerous than crossing at an intersection. Midblock crossings only have vehicles coming from 2 directions. Intersections have added risks from turning vehicles.

Blocking the left traffic lane and forcing the pedestrian to stand on the narrow median doesn't look very safe, either

That's your opinion...an opinion not founded on facts.

Go reread what you quoted. I didn't say midblock is always safer than crossing at an intersection, I said it's not automatically more dangerous. There are a non-trivial number of intersections where jaywalking is prudent, either due to poor road design or bad driver habits. It varies depending on the street and the city.

Giuliani used to throw you in jail for a night for this--a friend of mine was swept for crossing mid block, on a one way street...
