the Painted Desert
Lens: various Camera: K5, Kx,Optio P70 Photo Location: Arizona

The Painted Desert is located e/o the town of Holbrook off of the I-40 in Arizona. In your travels you may have traveled right by this area and not noticed it, but if the light is right the area glows with color. The park abuts with the Petrified National Forest NP for an added bonus, so if you're driving by, stop in and enjoy this unique area.

Nice shots. Love those wide open spaces. 30 years on, Bob, and you are reminding me of how much fun we had there. Petrified forest had the crocodilian vertebrae as well. And newspaper rock with the petroglyphs. There is a lot more for you to post yet!

Wonderful landscapes, brother Bob. I was a boy when I last saw the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. I've just got to get out that way again sometime.

Amazing!

Wow, Bob! This might be your best series yet, and that's high praise. You've captured the wild, yet colorful landscape perfectly. Reminds me of a John Ford movie!

Yes, I like the way you phrased that, often the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. These areas have much to offer, we just have to take the time and look. thanks Bob

You've got quite a memory about the place Peter, I'll have to find the last Petrified Forest photos I have, this trip we spent most of the time in the desert area. There is also a "Newspaper Rock" in Utah, I posted a picture for you to view.

Thanks for 'Newspaper Rock', Bob. I think we saw it on the same trip through that part of Arizona and Utah when I was at the University of Arizona in 84-85. Rock art is a particular interest of mine (but it wasn't the reason I was at UofA - I just squeezed in what tourist-type prehistory I could.) I remember Holbrook. But you didn't mention Winslow. I stood on the corner, but I didn't see the girl in the flatbed Ford. Maybe she slowed down for you.

Pretty amazing petroglyphs. And obviously a very long history portrayed - some in the lower areas appear to be over-written in the centuries. Nice documentary, yours and the Navajo (?). Interestingly, the Dine of the U.S. Southwest and Canada' most northerly bands, the Dene, are strongly related in language, despite the vast separation geographically.
