Still more Spring things
Posted By: TonyTurley, 04-14-2014, 04:44 PM

Some more from this weekend's walk. K-30 again, some with the Vivitar S1 19-35mm, and others with the Pentax 55-300 WR.

I was surprised to find a bunch of Daffodils in a remote forest glen, 2 1/2 miles from my car. I had turned off of a gas line trail, and was just following an animal trail up a hollow. From the lay of the land and the way the area looked like it had once been cleared, I think I stumbled on an old homestead site, perhaps from the 1800s or earlier. There were moss-covered things in the weeds that looked like they may have once been fence posts and railings. Since the gas line trails are less than a century old, the only way to get to this homestead would have been a 5-6 mile ride on horseback to the mouth of the main hollow. There are no signs there was ever any type of road. I love finding old things in the woods!

Here are some of the moss-covered trees. Some of the others were arrow-straight. I was hoping there might be a building foundation, but no such luck:

Blackhaw (Viburnum prunifolium) was growing thick all over the former clearing:

Redbud (Cercis canadensis) is adding plenty of color to the landscape now. Along roadsides it really pops with all of the emerging green:

Tree-of-Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) just beginning to open:

Tent Caterpillars already nesting in their favorite tree, Black Cherry (Prunus serotina).

What's this one, mole? The flowers are similar to Clematis, but we're way too early for those:

A mushroom, but not the type I was hoping to find:

Beaked Trout Lily (Erythronium rostratum):

View from Overlook Rock. My fear of falling always causes my knees to turn to jello when I go here. However, the view is good enough that I force myself to come here at least a couple of times a year since I discovered it. I finally caught it when we had some blue sky, unlike the solid gray overcast of the last few times:

Tony - So sorry that I missed your question. The flower in question looks like one of the chickweeds - probably Stellaria pubera (Star Chickweed). It's a wild, woodland cousin of the Mouse-Ear Chickweed so common in lawns in the springtime. There's a close relative called Tennessee Chickweed (Stellarium corei) - main difference is that the sepals on S. pubera are much shorter than the petals, while S. corei has sepals as long as the petals.
