Tonight's lunar eclipse is almost upon us! Once the time comes (3:07-4:24am EST), let's see those moon photos - share them in this thread I will be taking the F* 250-600mm for a spin tonight.

Here's a guide we've put together on shooting the moon. It also contains specifics about this particular eclipse:

Here's an example of what we might see tonight as the moon passes through Earth's shadow:

Eclipse from SF Bay area through clouds

The clouds were consistently present and sometimes heavy for much of the SF bay area during the eclipse. I was able to set up my telescope mount based on marks on the ground and compass readings to hope for the best. No chance to autoguide as the clouds prevented a lock on any stars.

Took a series of more than 300 images for a timelapse video. Worked well until I managed to crash the camera and lock up the USB port, requiring a reboot to fix.

Here are some of the best from the series and a link to the video:

Pentax K10D, smc P-A* 1:4 300mm lens, 30 seconds F5.6, 100 ISO

Here's my $0.02 worth from San Diego, CA

Both shots with my K-30. First shot was done with a Sigma 50-500mm w/2x teleconverter. The second with a Pentax DA 55-300mm.

This was my first time shooting an eclipse of any kind. I experienced some difficulty with the Sigma/teleconverter setup once the blood moon was visible. No matter how high I set the ISO, how slow I set the shutter, and how far I opened my aperture, I could NOT get the moon to appear in my viewfinder. Hence, I decided to try the 55-300mm lens and it worked. I didn't think about it until later, but I wonder if the teleconverter was causing the problem. I guess I won't be able to test that theory until October!

Hi,

Here is the eclipse as seen from Puerto Rico
I made a composite image to look like sort of a timelapse.
The information is in spanish but I´m sure you can understand it.
The setup was my K5II with DAL 55-300 set at 260mm
I learned a lot in this experience.... and I need faster/longer lenses...

Some of them individually

1/250
f8
ISO400

1/100
f5.6
ISO 12,800!!

1/250
f8
ISO 400

Hope you like it.

Thanks!

Thanks. That's ISO 1600, f5.6 at 3 seconds. I used my el cheapo Tamron 70-300 zoomed to 105mm. I moved back quite a distance to allow the lens to compress the shot.

View from Winnipeg, Canada. Shot with an SMC Pentax DA* 60-250mm F5.6 @ 2.5 s ISO 400 and a K-5 II; cropped PP. I did try a A 2x Tele-Convertor but the pics were slightly out of focus (manual). However that could have been because of my eyes at that time of the morning...

It also could be due to the movement of the sky during your exposure. The two stars in the frame do show the trails you'd get due to the rotation of the earth. At an effective focal length of 375mm, even 2 seconds will give you a tiny amount of motion.
