Smile For The Camera! Street Portraits, The Ladies
Lens: DA 35mmAL, DA 50mm Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Denver, Colorado ISO: 80 Shutter Speed: 1/200s Aperture: F5
Posted By: rbefly, 04-20-2014, 07:34 AM

Here's a small sample of the street 'candid' portraits I've taken recently. In each case, I simply asked if I could take their photo; I've done this maybe 50 times and been turned down twice. A smile and honest, sincere approach goes a long way!
I have absolutely zero studio or portrait experience, all available light, one or two quick snaps (each) at most. Generally, whatever settings were already on the camera, all done with the plastic fantastic, except # 4 used the DA 50mm f/1.8. No softening or PP facial 'enhancement' added.
A couple of notes; # 3, Yes, I know there's a tree growing out of the (right-side) girl's head, classic 'beginners.' mistake. Next time I'l be more careful!
# 4, Where's the dog? Well, first off, I had the fifty mounted. Second, it wasn't a very cute dog anyway.
# 5. Not out-of-focus, it's slight camera shake, 1/50s @ ISO 3200 at near-twilight.
Hope you can forgive the technical mistakes, remember, these are street candids.
Try it, it's fun!
Ron

Smile!

Thanks, Dave + Igor! It's fun, but takes a bit of nerve to ask a total stranger. Looking back at the surrounding shots for the day, in each case I'd already been taking photos just before these ladies came along. So, apparently it wasn't a surprise when I asked. Maybe it makes a difference?
Appreciate the kind words!
Ron

Very good Ron and you seemed to have found some very willing models.

Thanks!

Thanks, Em! It took me a while to collect these, my lack of real portrait experience has spoiled many others, but I'm learning!

I love these, Ron - everyone looks so happy . . . . . just what I need on a Monday morning.

Thanks!

Thanks to Jer and Dave m, I appreciate it!
The first three are the best overall, the last two are somewhat rushed.
Guess I must learn to slow down from my usual 'Street' mode for portraits, regardless of the situation. But I'm never quite sure how they'll react to my fiddling with settings and/or lenses. Once they say OK, I have a tendency to just click!
I have started bringing the AF360FGZ with me, 'just in case' I need a fill flash.
Ron
