A morning walk in April
Lens: 55-300 WR Camera: K-30 Photo Location: Forests of WV
Posted By: TonyTurley, 05-01-2014, 08:18 AM

These are from a morning walk I took back on 4/19, and I'm just getting around to processing them. Just some things that caught my interest.

First turtle of 2014

I liked the way the phlox and moss were growing on this boulder

This little one was chewing on something

Some of our local forests have lots of dead Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana)

Have no idea what this is growing from the moss, but it was colorful

First web of 2014 . . . I've seen this repeated all over since then

Nice motives, cool series. I like the tones and compositions. Too bad that chipmunk manages to escape the focus!

Lovely series!

Oh I love walks in the woods. I have not posted any of mine yet.

I also take pictures of interesting stumps.

Thanks. The chipmunk is actually as focused as I could get; the photo is a pretty significant crop, because the little rodent was about 75' away.

Judging from the mud stains, your box turtle has just emerged from its winter sleep. Those "phlox on the rocks" are a great illustration of delicate, yet tough beauty. Will agree with the softness of the chipmunk image - still a cute photo though (Hope you'll be able to afford a long lens one of these days soon).

Oh, and the plant growing from the moss is called Stonecrop (Sedum ternatum). Named because it often grows right out of tiny cracks and crevices in the stones. Your photo shows them not quite in bloom...

Thanks mole. Yeah, I did the best I could with the chipmunk. Even at 300mm, it looked pretty small in the viewfinder. I've considered buying an even longer lens, but I can't imagine hauling a 400-500mm lens for 5-10 miles through the woods. Besides, I just bought a new guitar, so I have to build up the discretionary funds account again.

Your knowledge of our woodland plants is impressive. I know a few herbaceous things here and there, and do pretty well with trees and shrubs if there are leaves, fruit, or flowers. Once they are reduced to just bark and buds, I struggle a bit sometimes.
