Using the AF200FG flash limited me to 1/180 shutter speed. Ruby Throated hummers supposedly have a 53/second wing flap. I would have thought 1/180 would have froze those wings. What do you guys think of just using the on board flash ? Never mind, just tested the on-board flash and it will only allow a shutter speed of 1/180 also.

Hi Mike. I use my flash a lot with the hbirds since my feeders are in the shade.I usually shoot 200ISO at around 1/125 sec f/9.The flash I use is a Vivitar 285 HV non dedicated flash ($89) and it has several output levels. The on board K5 flash works well also.My hbirds are due to arrive shortly. The past 2 years they have shown up on May 5th-6th like they had reservations here. Most of the time I stand by the feeder from 2ft away and they don't mind the flash at all.--charliezap

Very nice photo. I've been using the Pentax 55-300mm lens from about 8 to 10 feet away on a tripod. Maybe I'll try to shoot from 2 feet away with the kit lens or just shoot at 55mm with the lens I've been using.
