mmmmmmm..........Cake
Posted By: xs400, 04-28-2008, 10:59 AM

Someone I know has a business both teaching baking and making specialty cakes. He wanted to update his website with new pictures of some of his cakes. On Sunday, I photographed 5 of his cakes. Here's the shots he liked best, they will be included in his updated website. All shots taken with K100D, F 35-70mm, combination of natural light and AG360 flash using cactus trigger and white umbrella.

Nice series Frank - not really much a cake person more of a pie man (apple , Blueberry ummm) , although I think I could gain some calories on #1 and #4. Lighting is very good. The last one ont the right side looking at the picture some higlights look a little blown out. #3 is taht a relfection on the plate ? Well done.

Thanks for the comments. You are right about the last one being blown out on the right. I also noticed that after I had posted the shot. I'll fix that later tonight. And the reflection on the plate in #3 - good catch, thanks for pointing that out. I'll fix that as well.

BTW, I'm also more of a pie man myself. But hopefully these shots will help with the guy's specialty cake business.

Well done on these captures.
The highly reflective surfaces make the shots more challenging, but you've done a good job.

Especially like the setup of the last one - the glass props in the simple background complete the picture nicely.
And the side lighting works brilliantly here, although there may be some blown highlights there also.
Perhaps setting up the umbrella and strobe a little further away may have helped to decrease the contrast and preserve the highlights?

The second-to-last shot is by far my favourite. And the cake is really really special. Must've taken quite some time to get it done properly.

I also thought the tree cake would would be the most difficult and time consuming and asked him about it. He actually said it was the easiest!! Any mistakes or flaws in the tree trunk just blend it, where as in the other cakes a flaw sticks out like a sore thumb. He has to be very careful with the smooth chocolate surfaces in the other cakes.

I fixed the wedding cake shot - I got rid of that blown out look on the right. Here's the improved version.

Much better tones on the last shot, Frank. But the image does seem to be a little... well, not straight.

Excellent Shots. Well lit.

Thanks a lot!!

The inside of the cakes were all made out of styrofoam!!! With just the frosting being edible. The flowers on #3 were real, but the flowers on the Wedding Cake were edible.
I rotated #5 a little to the left to straighten it out - thanks for pointing that out. Man, I sure miss a lot.
