Posted By: azerak, 05-20-2014, 06:49 AM

Some of my macro shots. Some of them have been posted in this forum before. But looking at the availability of the new dedicated macro forum, I guess I just have to repost some of them Will upload more later. All shots with Pentax K5 and Sigma 105mm 2.8 and Pentax AF540 flash.

How have you achieved the good lighting. I tried macro with the same lens and cam, although with a Metz 48 attached to the body. I noticed that the Sigma 105 mm occludes most of the flash light. So I guess you positioned the flash externally somehow and triggered it remotely?

Thanks

I actually use the flash attached to the body instead of having it externally. I dont have a picture of my rig, but it looks more or less like this. I learned this from my friend, the owner of the rig from this picture.

That looks really interesting. But this doesn't look like a standard flash, more like a ring flash. You claimed to us a Pentax AF540. Did I miss anything? The rig in the picture looks really custom ;-). What is this plane (diffusor) made of?

Many thanks!

I did use Pentax AF540. The setup from the picture is not mine, that was my friend's. But we have the same setup with the diffuser. I am not exactly sure what it is made of, but I think polystyrene. It was used to wrap something before I used it as my diffuser.

Really smart indeed! Perhaps I will take a closer look at the diffuser possibility. Thanks.

That's great! The important thing is that you get a good diffuser and your subject will be very well lit.

More photos from the same setup.

Screw out the lens ( for closest possible focus ) , use manual mode ( No auto focus ) ..
Then simply work out your point of focus before you go shoving the camera in the face of local fauna ...
Go out stalking , find a creature you want to shoot ! .. Walk up slowly , and knowing your point of focus , slowly put the camera in position and snap the photo ...

I know , it sounds simple . ( Because it is )
The hard part is setting up the camera ( F stop - ISO - shutter Speed - Flash ) so that it can be as easy as just moving into position and taking the shot .

Thank you.

So no need for teleconverters or reverse thingymabobbers? Do you use the pop flash or do I need a different one?

There is 1001 ways of doing macro , you just need to chose a way that suits you ..
A little research will go a long way ..
Depending on the gear you already own , you could have the makings of a very respectable macro rig .

https://www.google.com.au/search?site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1920&bih=...&q=Macro%20rig

Try the link , its for google images and the search words are Macro rig ..
There are just so many ways to do it , it could be counter productive to tell you how ...
Just see what you have on hand , and then maybe put something together that will allow you to go out and take pictures the way you want , not how some one else wants to ..
