Rainbow Lorikeets [5 imgs]
Posted By: AML, 04-30-2008, 11:27 PM

I was fortunate enough to have a Rainbow Lorikeet land on the balcony railing not to far away from me a few weeks ago.

All pics were taken with the Schneider 50-200mm lens @200mm.

This one was taken on a different day. They do love eating their apples.

Nice work ... last time i came close to Rainbow Lorikeets was in Narooma on holidays.
They were very tame indeed ... was easy to get a lot of shots.
Not sure what they are like in suburbia though ... I ahven't tried shooting them around my area.

Lories are such beautiful birds. The first series looks like a young one. His pose in the 3rd shot is sooooooo Lorikeet. But the last one is fabulous, great exposure too, they're easy to blow out. And all that apple everywhere is just adorable

There's plenty of them around my place, Simon. I found one a few months back that had been attacked by something and nursed it back to health. They fly thru the area every morning and evening. Even more prolific around Padstow area.

I get every other bird out my way ... except Lorikeets.
Mind you ... my dog chases the other birds off before I can capture them.

Lately we have been getting the Black Cockatoos and Gan Gans as well. You know it is getting cold when these guys fly through.

Great shots, that is a beautiful bird. I'm curious, in the first two shots there are fine white streaks in the background, was it raining?

Thanks Simon. My neighbours feed them so we see them on a daily basis, but they aren't that tame that you can hand feed them.

They are. They can be quite cheeky too! I was always told if they have the red circle in their eye they are adults? could be wrong though. Thanks for the comment on the last one, KrisK10D.

Simon, is there any chance of you getting a shot of the Black Cockatoos?

Thanks Scott. It wasn't rain. The white streaks are cobwebs that the camera picked up.

Man I get a few crows in the yard lately thats all. Lucky to have such willing models. 1&2 seem a little out of focus but the rest are great. Nice work

Will do my best.
I really want to try and get them ... it will only be in flight though if they are close enough though.

Awesome birds. I saw those things all over Adelaide when I was there for a business trip. Never got close enough for a good picture though.

Really nice capture there. I have Lorikeets and Rosellas in very large numbers all around. A gum tree on the street is in blossom, get noise of dozens of lorikeets all day and flying foxes all night.
They are very edgy around here and difficult to get a good shot. Very leafy as well, which tends to hide them a lot.

Well done.

# Mechanic ; Best of luck with Black and GanGan Cockatoos. That will be a real challenge. Hope you succeed and get some nice shots. Will be difficult I imagine, however.
