Dragonfly at 300mm

At 300mm and standing about 8 feet away, the lens is quite good I think - like taking a macro shot from afar. The background is a lake.

Great photos of a male Calico Pennant. You should check on Odonata Central and see if it's been reported for your county:

These are really something, Michael - I like my 55-300, as well, but I've not done anything this good with it.

Thanks everyone for the kind compliments.

Sailor, it's a great lens for closeups of large insects and frogs and the like.

I read that it is best at F8, so that is what I shoot with it at. I also read the kit lens (18-55mm) is best at F8 and above 21mm.

I have been planning to try this with the 60 - 250, and now you have inspired me. Wonderful perspective and so sharp and colourful. Wow!

Wonderful, they really stand out against the background. The 55-300 lens works well despite the lack of a close focussing distance.

Thanks again everyone for the comments.

It's true it has a long focussing distance at 300mm - probably around 8 feet or more. But it can be an advantage to take photos of creatures that don't particularly like you getting close to them with a macro lens.
