Warning: Large macro image - why I love my FA* 200/4
Posted By: Marc Langille, 01-27-2007, 11:18 AM

(Posted on another forum too)

I need to throw away the camera, and the lens... not.

I was perusing through my photos last week in preparation for the upcoming exhibits I am doing, and found this macro I did just 3 days after getting my FA* 200/4 macro lens.
I've provided a link to the image, and please note I've cropped it slightly.

To clarify why I posted this very large image - proof that the optics of Pentax's best lenses can still produce wonderful levels of detail, even with significant compression of the image size in CS2.

NOTE: I've compressed it to JPEG image quality 5 to reduce the file size to a more manageable 242KB...
Shot in RAW with the DS - taken at F/8, 1/500 sec,. ISO 200:

Prints quite nicely at 16x24... 8-)

Cheers,
Marc

Hi Marc, what a macro you are showing there.

The bee is in deed sharp and bokeh is really smooth there.

Sun may have been harsh but the background blurr is quite creamy with soft orange tone to it.

DS still can take great shots

maybe you must place smaller pictures! Then we can see it better

Hi James,

The amazing part is that I've reduced the image quality significantly. The bokeh would have been even nicer at quality 9-12, but the image is much larger.

Proof of how good Pentax optics really are...

Marc

Hi Walter,

No worries about doing that again - this was to simply demonstrate the clarity of Pentax's 200mm macro lens.

Otherwise you wouldn't have seen the very fine white fibers on the underneath the flower petals on the right side of the image...

Cheers,
Marc

You can also post 100% crops, though.

The reduction to JPEG left nasty artifacts, especially around the face/head of the butterfly. It certainly does have a lot of detail.

Good points, and I've learned something from everyone's posts.

Here's a resized, but not reduced much in quality image:

This is why I love broadband. I love to see large pictures and see all the amazing detail. This is a great shot!

Good point about the 100% crops, though. Sometimes it's good to just cut out a really nice section and show it at 100%. That can save on the bandwidth.
