Top Tip! Post your forum pictures (flickr/picasa) easy!
Posted By: cputeq, 05-04-2008, 06:32 AM

I was given this tip by a member of the Arstechnica photo thread and love it.

If you're a user of either Flickr or Picasa, this will save you tons of time when posting to "UBB" type message boards such as this.

OILU - Openforum Image Link Utility

Simply copy/paste the text that Picasa or Flickr gives you as the picture link, paste it into the top box at that page, and hit "process".

You can then copy the "Openforum" text it gives you into a forum page like here at PentaxForums and you automatically have a picture that is also a clickable link to flickr!

Very easy and beats hand-editing links! I was very thankful when they told me about this! Enjoy!

Note -- If you're posting large photos, just add "WIDE" (without the quotes) right after the <IMG> tags that you paste into your message.

Please help

I cannot figure out how to post a picture within a thread. In doing a search I did find this thread but I am still at a loss. I use Smugmug if that is any help.

I am not a technological genius so if someone could please give me a step by step I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, Robin

Robin, if you go to this page you will see a list of BB code that works on this forum: - BB Code List

When you are composing a message in advanced mode there are links at the bottom of the page that say "BBcode is on" and "[img] code is on", either will take you to the same page linked above with samples of the code you can use to link photos.

I don't use SmugMug (and the following photo is not mine), but to link this photo:

using the images tags from the BB code page "[IMG]url[/IMG]" without the quotation marks and with the URL between the tags I get this:

For large images you can use imgwide instead of img inside the square brackets and the picture will be automatically resized.

Hi C,
thanks for posting the link. I have seen this before and tried it out and now another time, but it never works for me.

As far as I understand, the basic for the image post is always a URL from the image itself like:

and then wrap it in tags. For me it works with flickr and very seldom with Picasa. Also, if I am logged into my Picasa and check the Pentaxforums for my posts they show up. However, quit the browser, clear the cache completely (or just try on another machine), and it does not work anymore. You can change the pixel-shrinking "/s400" part on the end of the URL to something else common like 800 or 1024 or leave it off completely (for the full 1600 pixels), won't make a difference.

Test pic with the above picture-URL from Picasa:

I can see this pic now on my machine. It can also very well be that in two weeks time it won't show anymore.

Best, Georg (Picasa-confirmed pessimist)

Quick Picasa Update

Picasa has updated some of their link generation tools so here is a quick update on how to get the right link for posting.

1. Click on "Link to this Photo" to bring up the Link Generators
2. Check off the box next to "Image only (no link) - By clicking this you are telling Picasa to generate a link without the HTML coding. HTML is not processed by Pentax Forums within posts so it is not needed.
3. Select Size - You are given 4 options 800px is suitable for viewing on a 17 inch screen or larger.
4. Copy the link from the "Embed Image" box. This link is the link you will use when asked to insert the URL of the image using the forum image posting tools.

Note that the link already contains "http://" so when posting here on the forums you will need to clear out the URL box that pops up so you do not post a link that beings with "http://http://"

Hope that helps!

very interesting pic and you might tell me please how you did it (special lighting?, special anything?).

I checked again what Mr. Apollinax said, but I guess it all remains the same for me (what I have posted previously).

Anyway here's another test. If it's true that Picasa has updated something about their link policy, I'm all for it!

If I could constantly post Picasa pics at say 800px it would be an absolute breakthrough for me - a nightmare for y'all cause I'll absolutely spill you with photos :-)

Fingers crossed, Georg (the other)

Wow, I just figured out an equivalent process for SmugMug. This changes everything--for the better.
