A few shots from my trip to Alaska (17 pictures)
Lens: Sigma 10-20, Pentax 50-135 Camera: K5, K3 Photo Location: Alaska
Posted By: fgaudet, 06-28-2014, 09:18 AM

Just a few pictures from my latest trip, for everyone to enjoy. Sadly I had to deal with mostly rainy and cloudy days but I still managed to have about 150 keepers (out of 3000 photos) taken over the course of 8 days.

It was my first real outing with the K3 but about 50% of the keepers were shot with my K5, a testament to its capability I guess. I was alternating which lens was mounted on which camera a few times a day in order to get a good comparison of how each camera was performing (DA* on one, 10-20 on the other, with the occasional times with my 35mm)

Alaska truly is a beautiful place filled with stunning scenery and amazing, welcoming people.

Some stunning shots!
I hope you weren't very close to the moose in the last shot. A mother moose in the presence of her calves can be seriously dangerous.

I got as close as I felt we were all comfortable. While always keeping the mother between me and her calves and making sure she was aware of my presence. I was surprised of how close the mother let me get without reacting at all. I actually had to zoom out a bit (shot at 90mm). There was a bit of a berm and a pretty deep ditch between us, creating an obstacle. They also had a nice escape route opposite from me.

But you're right, mother moose are very protective and can be very dangerous, they are wild animals after all. They are faster and more agile than they look. I encounter them all the time here (northern Ontario) and every couple of years, there's a family living on my property (I live in a remote area) and run into them in my hiking/snowshoeing trails.

Don't try this at home I guess. I could have been in danger for sure.

Those are some amazing photos of a gorgeous landscape. I have yet to make it up to Alaska.
