a couple of weeks ago Hampton Beach sponsored a sand sculpture competition, they do it every year but this is the first time I have gone.
It is amazing how detailed they get. Here are three of the entrees, the first picture was judged the winner.

Wow just amazing, never seen anything like that before, I vow now never to use my humble bucket a spade again.

Very nice, I still wonder how they got the sand to hang together like that... this beach must have magnetic sand or something like that...

Beer works well because the ants hold hands to keep from falling over.

They supply each sculpture with the same amount of sand,I believe that there is a little clay mixed in, they get to choose what ever they want to sculpt. It showed them on tv the day before they begin, most of them don't know what they are going to carve at that point. The sand is in a big wooden frame and they add water and get up on top of the pile an stomp on it like they were crushing grapes, to compact the sand. Then they remove the wooden frame. The sculptures are fenced off so public can't touch them, they last about two weeks.
