The first round of young Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are leaving the nests. Here's a few images from the 4th of July…identified by the name of the plant.

You nailed it at the last shot. I imagine it would look stellar in print.

Really superb shots! How did you get these? A remote shutter release and a well placed tripod?

Thanks! Honestly, I've never used a tripod or shutter release shooting hummingbirds. I have my yard planted with a variety of nectar plants to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. I also have several plants in containers that I'm able to move around for better lighting or backgrounds. I think that patience is probably the key to most of my hummingbird images. I spend waaayyyy too much time on weekends positioning myself to get shots of hummingbirds visiting different blooms in my yard and brace myself with what ever is available…trees, chair arms, window sills…even the door frame and hood of my car I always try to focus on either the the bloom the hummingbird is feeding from or the head/eye of the hummingbird and I'm rarely any further away than 10 feet. The young hummingbirds are coming around now and are much less skittish than the adult birds .

I've been doing this for a few years and there's several more images at http://www.pbase.com/budohio/rubythroated_hummingbirds if you're interested
