When I was a young fella... whisky used to get me in all sorts of trouble so I stayed away from it for years.

As I got older in last twenty years or so I learned to drink it "responsibly" and joined a local Whisky Parliament, where I'm now the Parliamentary Member for Laphroaig (big clue there as to favourite).

There are two main types of whiskies, blended (made up of various malts) and a single malt, each have there own merits.

I tend to stick to single malts and my choice on the night is governed by both my mood and the company I'm in, as this affects the enjoyment of the whisky in ways that you can't really document.

As to best selling brand it's probably something like Johnnie Walker, but it's really down to personal choice, or put it another way... I don't personally own any "Walkers".

Ardbeg is another to try. Very similar flavor to Laphroaig, but a little more, well, "in your face". If Laphroaig were 220 grit sandpaper, Ardbeg 10yo would be 60 grit. I like Lagavulin as welI, but it costs half again as much as Laphroaig and I honestly can't tell the difference so I usually buy Laphroaig and Ardbeg, then let my mood of the moment decide which one I pour.
I you're going to try some of these, do yourself a favor and get some Glencairn glasses if you haven't already.

BTW, should it ever come up in conversation Islay is pronounced 'eye-la'.
