A week of hummingbird adventures in Arizona and at home
Lens: DA*300 Camera: K-5IIs Photo Location: Sedona, Arizona and southwest Ohio

The past week has been an incredibly awesome mix of hummingbird adventures…

Last Thursday, my daughter, Katie, and I traveled to Sedona, Arizona for The Hummingbird Festival, where I had been invited to give a presentation on "Photographing Hummingbirds in Your Yard and Gardens" on Saturday morning… definitely, one of the all-time coolest things I have ever had the opportunity to do. The next day, we got up early for a sunrise breakfast at a local home, and the heavy rains didn't deter anyone… or any hummingbirds…they were everywhere. After that, we did a self-guided garden tour and visited a banding site where the bander estimated that there were between 4 and 5 THOUSAND hummingbirds (5 different species) on the property….it was AMAZING.

While on the tour, we ran into a couple who had sponsored a sunrise breakfast at their home the previous day, and they invited us to come hang out and watch the birds on their canyon property on Monday…. which we did…. and it was another awesome experience. (I've never been so excited about having birds poop and pee on my head lol )

We also did some hiking and exploring and visited a few of the human feeding and drinking stations that were great fun (I highly recommend The Oak Creek Brewery and Grill if you ever visit Sedona )

Upon returning from Arizona, I received a message from my parents saying that they had found a baby hummingbird that had, apparently, fallen from its nest. It appeared healthy and the mother was feeding it perched on on e of the container plants in their yard. Needless to say, I spent there next several hours observing the mother and youngster.

I've never used the video feature on any of my Pentax cameras, but decided that this might be the perfect chance to experiment with it a bit. I'm providing a link to what I uploaded to Facebook, because I have no idea how to embed the videos here. (The video quality is better if you click "HD")

Below are a few images from my week of hummingbird adventures

Can't let this pass without comment.

Some of the best Hummingbird shots I've ever seen.

A pleasure to view.

As I was viewing this series, I thought about commenting on one, but then the next one up was even better than the last! All are fantastic! I love the first landscape. Great capture. Very majestic, indeed.
