Big Band Jazz

Although most of my gigging back in the day involved small rock, blues and fusion groups, I loved playing in big bands in high school and later - in a band for non-music majors - in college. I truly digged blowing a solo on my tenor over the punch of brass in the background. A few weeks ago I attended a gig of the Brazosport Jazz Band at a local restaurant/pub. The band is primarily composed (no pun intended) of local educators (including my son-in-law) and really gets the job done. Here are some shots I grabbed during the performance.

Jer

A tenor man telling the truth and nothing but the truth:

Sax section pullin' a load:

Brass section blasting out the chart:

My son-in-law working Joe Zawinul's (RIP) deliciously funky, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", which he wrote in the '60s when he was in Cannonball Adderley's hard bop group. Later, Zawinul - in the ground-breaking fusion band, Weather Report - wrote the now classic, "Birdland."

"Big baritone cleanin' up the muddy breaks . . . . . . . " from Jimmy Buffett's "Saxophones."

Nice colours Jer. Must have been a challenge with the strong back light?

I wish you had been there, brother Bob - we would have had a great time! I was an avid and dedicated sax guy through high school and entered college as a music major, of all things. About the middle of my freshman year, I switched to chemistry - science is just as cool as music in its own way. However, I continued to gig for the next 8 years until I finished my Ph.D. A great experience I'll never forget.

Trev, I appreciate it. The back light was - indeed - a pain, but I did the best I could.

Nice shots! I played bass in a band a few times, and you're right it's a lot of fun!
These guys must have really been sweating in the summer humidity of south Texas, even in the shade!

Thanks for both!! I just can't believe this was recorded 1977!

It was fun, friend Tom. Believe me, my talents are severely limited - as my wife will be happy to explain in detail! :-D.
