Caught this fellow preening himself in the sun today - either that or he was shy.

I think he was a little startled by the wasp fly-by in image three.

Thanks Jer, most kind.

You're too modest. I do seem to recall you posted a pretty nice heron or egret shot a while back.

Hi Dave,

I didn't notice the wasp at the time I took the shot.

I was as surprised as the Goldfinch when I saw it in processing.

Great series of shots Tom. #3 is a classic! I have the K version. Nice to see what it can do.

Thanks Steve,

As for #3 it was pure luck. As a rule I'm happy just to get the bird in focus. Too bad the depth of field is so shallow on these long lenses. It would have been a killer shot if the wasp was in focus as well.

In the next frame after this one, a badly out of focus frame, the Goldfinch snaps at the wasp and just about catches it. I really like this focal length and carry it with me whenever I go out for a walk. I'd be interested i seeing some of your 400mm efforts. This focal length takes a lot of time and effort but I think it is worth it.

I agree about the DOF Tom. Maybe that's why the minimum f stop is f/45. I'm going to try some at f/16 and f/22 but I'll have to bump the ISO! Here are some I took at f/11.

Nice work Steve.

I think I have seen these before.

These old lenses still have some chops. With a litle time, effort and luck they can produce some great images. I'll be the first to admit they are not for everbody though.
