As for #3 it was pure luck. As a rule I'm happy just to get the bird in focus.
Too bad the depth of field is so shallow on these long lenses. It would have been a killer shot if the wasp was in focus as well.
In the next frame after this one, a badly out of focus frame, the Goldfinch snaps at the wasp and just about catches it. I really like this focal length and carry it with me whenever I go out for a walk. I'd be interested i seeing some of your 400mm efforts. This focal length takes a lot of time and effort but I think it is worth it.
