The joys of a prime lens
Posted By: alansteward, 08-29-2014, 05:01 AM

I have grown up with cameras that have one single lens so I don't believe for a minute that you have to zoom in, zoom out to get the best pictures. When there is zoom, there is compromise. At which range will the lens perform best. Does anybody know? If it you knew, why not own a prime lens that operates in that range.

I have been collecting lenses for a while now and as much I appreciate the convenience of a "one does all" lens, my favorite lenses are all fixed focus, from a Russian Helios Lens to a Voigländer Color Ultron. From a Meyer Görlitz 135mm to a Super Albinar Wide-Angle, I have a nice collection of prime lenses.

The sad part is, these are all "vintage" lenses, meaning that vintage also means "manual". While that is quite OK in most situations where you have time to tweak your settings, for a quick snapshot, these lenses just don't do the trick. So, I have been eying the Pentax 50mm lens at my local photo retailer for a long time. Should I, shouldn't I?

I think I would create some great photos with the Pentax 50mm lens and I would love to share them on this forum.
